Derived from the Greek sēptikós (“related to putrefaction”) + haîma (“blood”), it is a medical condition characterized by the presence of pathogenic microorganisms in the bloodstream, triggering a systemic inflammatory response that can progress to organ dysfunction, sepsis, and risk of death.
